DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION IN FULL SWING….SOME OTHER NUTS/DOWNTOWN THEATER….BUSINESSES HELPING THOSE IN NEED AND MAKING SAFETY TOWN BECOME A REALITY….EVENTS COMING UP!!!

 DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION IN FULL SWING

Have you driven by the McHenry Downtown Theater recently?  If not I have attached some photographs below.  Work on the new McHenry Indoor Theater and D.C. Cobbs restaurant is well underway.  Hidden Pearl/Utopian Roast is moving forward with relocating to the former Some Other Nuts Building (1252 N Green Street).   Other plans are in the works for the building and adjacent properties as well, including new businesses.
Many of you know Rose Lillegard, who operated the Some Other Nuts business for 34 years at that location and I want to thank and acknowledge Rose for her commitment to the City of McHenry downtown and business community and wish her well!
Downtown Revitalization is moving forward although it never really stopped and certainly will not end.  A lot of planning and time go into these projects and it often takes many years but you can begin to see the positive domino effect occurring.
Downtown Revitalization is and always will be at the forefront of our community planning efforts but it takes time and an investment from numerous parties including  the City of McHenry; local businesses, property owners, service organizations as well as The McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Business Association.
This collaboration will continue and change is imminent; some changes are more difficult to accept than others but the goal will always remain the same:

A vibrant 24/7/365 downtown with a diversified economic base as well as a residential component which retains and preserves the historic and cultural fabric of our three distinct downtown areas to the greatest extent practical!

THANK YOU:  OLD TOWN PIZZA AND CATERING, DUNKIN DONUTS,  BULLDOG ALEHOUSE AND VINYL FRONTIER RECORDS

Many of you know about the terrible tragedy, which occurred on April 21 of this year in Lakemoor.  The Damiano family lost everything in the fire.  Many residents and several businesses have stepped forward to assist and I just would like to thank a few of them:  Vinyl Frontier Records, 1326 N Riverside Drive; Old Town Pizza and Catering, 514 S. Route 31; Bulldog Alehouse 1501 S. Illinois Route 31 and Dunkin Donuts, 4502 W Elm Street.

JESSUP MANUFACTURING COMPANY; THE HOME DEPOT; BIG R; SHERWIN-WILLIAMS PAINT STORE; BEHR; CVS PHARMACY; JIMMY JOHNS; RIVERSIDE BAKE SHOP; MCHENRY TOWNSHIP FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT AND TRAFFIC CONTROL & PROTECTION PARTNER ON CITY OF MCHENRY SAFETY TOWN PROJECT

Another public-private partnership in the works is the City of McHenry Safety Town.  The City, in conjunction with McHenry Township Fire Protection District, have been planning the construction of a Safety Town for our community.  The City of McHenry Safety Town will be built on the Municipal Center Campus adjacent to the McHenry Zone Skate Park.

Safety Town is a national program that focuses on teaching young children safe practices at home, school and within the community utilizing a miniature town.  In conjunction with Safety Town a curriculum consisting of a wide range of topics applicable to daily living such as:  bicycle, pedestrian, school bus, fire, water, railroad, playground, pet and stranger-danger safety lessons is used to educate young people in a realistic setting.
Safety Town is an outdoor classroom, which can be expanded or altered at any point to adapt to changing real-world challenges so the next generation of leaders understands what lies ahead and can be prepared to embrace these challenges and opportunities.

On Friday, May 19 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., City staff and volunteers from our local business community including  CVS Pharmacy 3900 W Elm Street The Home Depot, 2461 N Richmond Road and Jessup Manufacturing Company, 2815 W Illinois Route 120, will commence constructing the initial phase of The City of McHenry Safety Town.

Big R, 1860 N Richmond Road, The Home Depot, Jessup Manufacturing Company, Behr, through a partnership with The Home Depot and Sherwin-Williams Paint Store, 3718 W Elm Street are donating materials and supplies, their products as well as volunteers and expertise.

Jimmy Johns,  2308 N Richmond Road, Riverside Bake Shop, 1309 N Riverside Drive   and Traffic Control & Protection  225 Miles Parkway in Bartlett, Illinois are also donating materials and supplies, food as well as miniature street signs as part of this collaborative effort.

Prior to May 19 City staff will be working to prepare the site and setting up work sites so the volunteer crews can transform the concrete pad into miniature city blocks with roadways, sidewalks and crossings, as well as construct mini portable buildings representative of a real-world community on May 19.

The McHenry Parks & Recreation Department is offering a one- week Safety Town Camp June 12 to 16, 2017 and 16 one-day Clinics between June 19 and July 28, 2017.

The camp and clinics include instruction, fun activities and hands-on learning opportunities in Safety Town.  This project would not have been possible without the assistance of multiple City departments and our business community.

For more information on this project programs and opportunities to volunteer, teach or donate funds to expand Safety Town in the future, please contact Cindy Witt, Recreation Supervisor at 815-363-2166 or cwitt@ci.mchenry.il.us.

This is an ongoing effort with the ultimate goal to involve and engage as many members our local residents, business community and service organizations as possible because in the end our children need to be educated and prepared for the real-world challenges which lie ahead!
