DOWNTOWN SUPERGROUP…BUSINESS CHAMPIONS….JESSUP CELEBRATES 60 YEARS….STAPLES!!!

DOWNTOWN UNCORKED AND FLAVORS OF FALL….DOWNTOWN COLLABORATION!!!

Thank you to the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce and the McHenry Area Downtown Business Association for hosting Downtown Uncorked and Flavors of Fall.  Both events were extremely well-attended and well-received.  There is a serious collaborative effort being made by the City, McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce, McHenry Area Downtown Business Association and businesses to work cooperatively and coordinate our efforts.

Several of us have met three times and will continue to meet monthly to discuss how we can work together, unify the downtown areas, plan 2017 events, improve signage, etc.  I have spoken to many of the downtown business owners interested in making a commitment to our downtown and invite anyone to attend our monthly meetings.  We need everyone to buy-in for the collective good of the whole.  Please contact myself or Kim Lowe from Kiera Confections to learn more!

FAÇADE GRANT PROGRAM

The City of McHenry has a Façade Grant Improvement Program intended to assist businesses in a portion of their expenses in improving their façade.  There are guidelines on work which can be done.  Recently, Bob Funk, owner of 1328 Riverside Drive and 1334 Riverside Drive took advantage of the program replacing awnings.  Thank you!  Below are some photographs of the new awnings.  Please contact me or Pat Wirtz, Chairman of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission for more information.

Congratulations to Jessup Manufacturing for celebrating 60 years in business!  Thank you!

Economic Development is a journey not a destination and takes time.  Sometimes it looks like nothing is happening but there is always work going on behind the scenes.  The City is committed to economic development but it typically isn’t a quick process.  Many of you know Staples closed and Centegra is moving into their space as part of their expansion efforts.

I contacted a representative from the Shops at Fox River to see if Staples would consider relocating into a smaller unit.  I was informed Staples is leaving this market-that’s the company’s decision.  However, this provides opportunities for other companies in our City which provide similar services to gain more business.

Companies are constantly evaluating their stores, business models and adapting to market conditions and their customers.  This is part of the normal course of business…stores close…others open, but the bottom line is the City is always working to stay on top of the market as much as possible and trying to address needs, fill buildings, and maintain a vibrant economy.
