The Saturday festivities culminate with Mayor Low, along with families and children assisting in flipping the switch illuminating trees throughout Veterans Memorial Park at 5:30 p.m.  To learn more please visit http://mchenrydowntown.biz/.

NOVEMBER 20, 2016 TOYS FOR TOTS PARADE!!!

The festivities continue on Sunday November 20 with the Annual Toys for Tots Parade.  If you have not had an opportunity to participate in this annual community event you don’t want to miss it.  A parade, which begins on Main Street at 1:00 p.m. and travels through downtown McHenry, north on Green Street, past Veterans Memorial Park, north on Riverside Drive and west back to Veterans Memorial Park features floats constructed by numerous community businesses and organizations.

Toys for Tots is a program which new unwrapped toys are collected and distributed annually as Christmas gifts to children in the area where the toys are collected.  It began in 1947 by a Marine Corps Reservist and has continued since that time.

Additionally the parade features a large contingent of individuals riding motorcycles which provides a unique element to this downtown extravaganza.  In the past the number of motorcycles in the parade has exceeded 1,000!

A truck staffed by the United States Marine Corps Reserve will be parked at Veterans Memorial Park collecting toys for children in our area who otherwise may not receive any during the Holiday Season.

NOVEMBER 26, 2016 IS SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY!!!

Over the next several weeks, many will be out enjoying family and friends as the Holiday Season commences.  Further, a lot of shopping will occur over the next several weeks, and this is a time as a community we can really support local businesses.  NOVEMBER 26, 2016 IS SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY.  Small Business Saturday is between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  It was first promoted nationally in 2010 and is a trademark of American Express.

You can visit the following site to learn more about the evolution of Small Business Saturday and how communities have embraced this as an opportunity to promote their local businesses: https://www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/shop-small/.  Although Small Business Saturday is marketed as a retail opportunity it’s important to remember retail is but one component of a vibrant and diverse economy.

Small businesses represent the backbone of our local, regional and national economies and the term small business is also somewhat misleading.  A small business can include up to 500 employees, nonetheless, as consumers we need to ensure we support these “brick and mortar” companies and we can do this in numerous ways.

Shopping and buying local is a great opportunity to support local businesses but don’t forget small businesses which provide services or manufacturers which employ people within the community.

By utilizing these products and services we are supporting not only the business but the people who work there (many of which live in our community) and contributing to our local economy, which has a domino effect on the regional and national economies.

Cyber Monday is another day which has evolved in our 24/7/365 economy and “showrooming” refers to people visiting brick and mortar stores to research an item they are seeking to purchase and then going on-line to find the best price for the product they want and purchasing it.  On-line shopping certainly has a place in our economy however it does impact small businesses, with brick and mortar locations, as items purchased on-line does not always equate into sales tax received by the local community and currently it is increasingly more difficult for businesses with physical locations to compete.

Here’s a suggestion I want to offer. If you do want to “showroom” do so in this manner:  go on-line to research a product and compare pricing and when you determine which product you want to purchase visit a brick and mortar store in the City of McHenry and purchase the item.

Alternatively, order the item on-line and have it shipped to a store in the City of McHenry.  Either way, your tax dollars will stay in the City and you are supporting local businesses and the people who work there.

A SALUTE TO VETERANS!!! VETERANS DAY NOVEMBER 11, 2016!!!!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!!

On Friday November 11, 2016, Veterans Day, we honor and celebrate all those men and women who have served and those currently serving and protecting our country.  A combined Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the McHenry VFW Post, honoring all military veterans on Friday November 11, 2016.

The City of McHenry is fortunate to have three Veterans organizations:  McHenry VFW #4600, 3002 W Illinois Route 120 http://mchenryvfw.org/, American Legion Auxiliary Post #491, 1331 N Riverside Drive http://www.legion.org/, and the Polish American Legion of American Veterans Post #188 http://plavpost188.com/, 1304 Park Street.  Further, the City of McHenry is home to Transitional Living Services (TLS), Inc. http://www.tlsveterans.org/, which operates a drop-in center at 5330 W Elm Street and assists Veterans and their families with meeting basic needs.  Veterans Day coincides with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which signified the end of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on those who put their lives on the line, have done so and those who lost their lives so that the rest of us can live in the greatest country in the world and enjoy countless freedoms others around the world do not and may ever enjoy.  If you know a Veteran, take a moment and thank them for their service or reflect on someone you may have known who served our country at one time but is deceased.

The Vietnam Memorial located in Veterans Memorial Park and pictured below was donated by the McHenry High School Class of 1964.  The monument honors four McHenry High School graduates killed in Vietnam:  John Granath Jr., killed at 20; Glenn Davis, killed at 22; Carter Freund, killed at 22; and James Ambrose, killed at 23.  If you have not seen the monument I would highly encourage you to do so.  It is a wonderful tribute to these men!  A monument dedication ceremony was held on November 11, 2014!

STEFFAN’S JEWELERS CELEBRATES 70 YEARS IN MCHENRY-TO BE RECOGNIZED BY MCHENRY CITY COUNCIL!!!

TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

The City of McHenry is continually thinking of ways to promote, support and recognize businesses in the community.  This year Jessup Manufacturing was recognized for 60 years in business by the McHenry City Council.  The Jessup Family came to a City Council meeting and Mayor Low read a proclamation and presented a plaque to the Jessup Family and their senior management team.  Gertrude Jessup, 99 years young, attended the meeting and it provided an opportunity to showcase a family business which has being handed down multiple generations.

The City certainly does not want to exclude any business but is not always aware of anniversaries.  I believe, whether it’s a proclamation, plaque or just a letter of recognition, it’s important to celebrate the businesses in our community in some form or fashion.  If you know of or are a part of a business which is celebrating an anniversary or commemorating a specific success, please contact me and we’ll be sure to recognize the business and people behind the business.

It’s a small gesture but very important nonetheless because many businesses have and continue to make a significant investment(s) in our community.

STEFFAN’S JEWELERS

At the November 7, 2016 meeting at 7:00 pm the City Council will recognize Steffan’s Jewelers, which is celebrating their 70th anniversary this year.  What follows is a brief narrative and pictorial history of Steffan’s Jewelers.
In 1946 Harold & Theresa Steffan opened their first store at 3917 Main Street.  This is the current location of Plum Garden Restaurant.

In 1976 Harold & Theresa’s daughter, Marie Diedrich, took over ownership of Steffan’s which had been relocated to 1212 N. Green Street.  Marie’s four children, Elizabeth, Kathy, Michael and Suzanne began to learn the family business.

In 1991 Marie’s daughter Suzanne purchased the family business, at that time located at 3726 W Elm Street.

Suzanne, her sister Kathy and brother Michael worked together growing the business.

In 1998 Suzanne moved Steffan’s Jewelers to the Fountain Shoppes of McHenry, 325 Front Street where it remains today.

In 2013 Kathy’s oldest daughter, Karly, who had obtained a degree in gemology, began working at the store and is currently the head appraiser.  She is also a frequent author of the column, GEMTALK, featured in the Northwest Herald newspaper.

Suzanne’s oldest son, Max, is also part of the 4th generation of family involved with the business.  Max’s aspiration is to become the 4th generation owner taking Steffan’s to the next level.  Suzanne’s youngest son, Clark also assists in the store during his college breaks and provides a sounding board for direction and growth.
Suzanne Cannon, owner of Steffan’s Jewelers, proudly supports many charities in the community and believes this is a corporate responsibility and privilege of owning a business.  She believes the true wealth and gratification of being a business owner is serving the community which she is a part of.
Suzanne has employed many amazing & talented individuals from the community.  She understands that it takes great people to have a great company. Suzanne especially wishes to give special thanks to Carol, Marilee, Jessie, Victoria, Allison & Missy who currently are the people making up the wonderful Steffan’s team today!
