DEDICATED CITY OF MCHENRY EMPLOYEES ENSURE BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS REMAIN OPERATIONAL AND SAFE…HAVE AND HAPPY AND SAFE JULY 4th!!!

Last weekend an incident occurred requiring the replacement of a City fire hydrant in the area around Crystal Lake Road and Illinois Route 120.  On Tuesday June 28 the City’s Public Works Department undertook the replacement and 18 businesses and residences could not utilize City water during the repair.  Water spilled onto the roadway and the McHenry Police Department assisted with traffic control ensuring the safety of residents, businesses and City employees while the work was completed.

The problem was corrected relatively quickly however the impacted residences and businesses were issued a boil order, which is standard procedure following a situation such as this.   This allows the City to test the water following the repair and ensure it meets all criteria and standards to be consumed and utilized as potable water-typically 24-48 hours following the repair. On June 30 at 8:15 a.m. the boil order was lifted following successful water testing.  The City coordinates and reports the water testing to the McHenry County Health Department and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.  Following successful testing the City notifies those impacted and the boil order is lifted.

This repair was required due to an accident, which the City was not a party to, however to ensure our residences and businesses were protected several businesses and residences (18) located in the immediate vicinity of the repair had to notified.  Employees from the City’s Public Works Department went door-to-door and informed each business and residence individually.  While this type of situation is not uncommon it can adversely impact both residences and businesses.  However the City is extremely fortunate to have a professional staff to address issues such as this in a timely manner to minimize any adverse impact.

Whether it’s 100 degrees or 20 degrees below zero City employees do not stop working until the problem is corrected, which could be any time, day or night; 24/7/365.  Many times these situations are completed with most of us in the City being unaware however this repair occurred on a busy roadway.  Nonetheless the situation was handled with the same professionalism and completed in a timely manner without incident.  It is unfortunate that residences and businesses are impacted but this impact is minimized due to the experience and dedication of City employees as well as coordination of efforts across City departments, McHenry County and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
