BIG R WORKNG FEVERISHLY TO OPEN NEW STORE IN FORMER TARGET BUILDING

If you’re driven on north Richmond Road recently you’ve probably noticed some activity at the former Target building, 1860 N Richmond Road (McHenry Plaza Shopping Center).  Big R, a competitor of Farm and Fleet, has been working diligently preparing the building to be ready to open to the public the first week of November 2015.  Big R is very excited about this new location, as is the City, which will greatly assist in revitalizing this shopping center and the adjacent shopping centers.  I have been receiving numerous calls from developers, building owners, real estate brokers and perspective businesses interested in bringing businesses, as well as expanding existing businesses in the City of McHenry.  To learn more about Big R visit http://www.bigr.com/.

MCHENRY COUNTY REAL ESTATE FORUM:  “ADVANCING DEVELOPMENT”

Last week, McHenry City Administrator Derik Morefield and I had an opportunity to attend and participate in a McHenry County Real Estate Forum entitled “Advancing Development.”  The event was hosted by the Heartland Real Estate Organization and McHenry County and included many other sponsors.  It provided an opportunity for real estate brokers, government officials and others who attended to learn about local, State of Illinois and Federal economic development efforts and other programs which promote the development of communities.  Speakers included State Senator Pamela Althoff, County Board Chairman Joseph Gottemoller, United States Small Business Administration, Home Builders of Greater Chicago, U.S. Green Building Council, Landmarks Illinois, Wells Fargo, McHenry County Economic Development Corporation and many local McHenry County municipalities.

Those who attended thought the event was extremely beneficial and provided a comprehensive overview of how all these organizations and governmental entities are working cooperatively to promote community and economic development.  This was a great example of diverse groups gathering for a common purpose.  We are very fortunate to have a very positive working relationship with all of these entities with the end goal being:  responsible development benefiting residents, businesses and visitors alike and making our communities better places and enhancing quality of life for all!!!

Economic development is a marathon not a sprint and takes time however you can be assured the City of McHenry is doing everything possible to foster new business, assist in business expansion as well as business retention.  The City of McHenry, McHenry County and communities and organizations throughout the County are proud to have a cooperative and extremely cohesive working relationship!
Please help us keep this effort strong to the greatest extent practical for businesses, residents and visitors alike!  The City Council is continually evaluating ways to assist in promoting business, tourism, community events and service!  Economic development is an ongoing effort the City is committed to and is a community-wide effort.  At the end of the day the entire community and everyone who is a part of it benefits!

NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT APPRECIATION DAY; NATIONAL MANUFACTURING DAY; MARYA DIXON DAY; TRAFFIC LIGHT AT DARTMOOR DRIVE AND CRYSTAL LAKE ROAD, COUNTRY MEADOWS CRAFT SHOW!!

NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT APPRECIATION DAY

At the September 14th City Council meeting Mayor Low proclaimed Saturday September 19, 2015 as National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.  Next time you have the opportunity please take a moment to thank a law enforcement officer for serving our community and protecting residents, businesses and visitors alike.  Although we may not see everything that goes into day-to-day police work there is a great deal of comfort knowing we live in a very safe City which contributes to a high quality of life.  People who put their lives on the line every day ensure this is the case and although it is not always obvious a great deal of effort is placed into proactively protecting our community, educating residents and businesses; interacting with our schools daily and working in conjunction with other agencies including the McHenry Township Fire Protection District.

Another way to show support for law enforcement officers is to participate in the “Blue Ribbon Campaign.”  Tie a blue ribbon around a tree, replace an outside bulb with a blue bulb, use a bow, cut a tablecloth into strips, take a roll, of blue ribbon used for wrapping presents…The important thing is to show your support!  THANK YOU!

 NATIONAL MANUFACTURING DAY-OCTOBER 2, 2015

At the September 14th City Council meeting Mayor Low proclaimed Saturday October 2, 2015 as National Manufacturing Day.  The City of McHenry is home to numerous national and international manufacturers in industrial and business parks across the City.  Often these businesses are not at the forefront in a community due to being located and segregated in industrial and business parks, which you may never see if you don’t work at a particular business within that park.

However, these businesses are primary employers and provide numerous jobs to residents and people outside the City.  If you have time, take a drive or walk thru one or all of the industrial or business parks and note the businesses within such parks.  Following is a map depicting all of the business and industrial parks in the City of McHenry.

You will be amazed at what is produced and manufactured in the City of McHenry which is utilized worldwide.  We are lucky to have a solid industrial base, which is an integral component of our local and regional economy.  To learn more about National Manufacturing Day please visit:  http://www.mfgday.com/.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 MARYA DIXON DAY

At the September 14th City Council meeting Mayor Low proclaimed Sunday September 20, 2015 as Marya Dixon Day.  Marya Dixon served on the City of McHenry Landmark Commission for over 30 years!!!  This is the definition of community service.  I have had the opportunity to work with Marya Dixon and the Landmark Commission and can attest to the important role they play in the maintaining, preserving and promoting the City’s historic fabric.  We are lucky to have a group of individuals which take an active interest in ensuring our past is never forgotten and Marya Dixon should be commended for her years of service to the City of McHenry and advancing the goals of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission!  THANK YOU!

The City of McHenry Landmark Commission's Mission “Is to encourage preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and adaptation of structures, landscapes and areas representing the city's heritage for the present and future citizens of McHenry through on-going activities in education, technology, special events, surveys, interviews and recognitions.”  Are you interested in learning more about the Landmark Commission or becoming a member?  Please visit http://www.ci.mchenry.il.us/departments/community/landmark.html or call me and I will point you in the right direction!

TRAFFIC SIGNAL AT DARTMOOR DRIVE AND CRYSTAL LAKE ROAD

Work has commenced on a traffic control signal at Dartmoor Drive and Crystal Lake Road.  The project includes the installation of a four-way traffic light, similar to the traffic signal at Winding Creek Drive and Crystal Lake Road.  The traffic signal will assist in facilitating the safer movement of vehicles through the intersection but will also provide a safe route for students walking to Riverwood Elementary School as well as McHenry High School West Campus in addition those who want to utilize City parks (Fox Ridge; Jaycees and Cold Springs Parks as well as the McHenry County Conservation District Prairie Path).  The project does not include any new lanes for traffic or roadway widening and will be completed this year!

COUNTRY MEADOWS CRAFT SHOW AND WINE AND BEER TASTING
This Sunday September 20 the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce will host their annual Country Meadows Craft Show and Wine and Beer Tasting at Veterans Memorial Park in downtown McHenry.   You can enjoy crafts, a farmers market, vendor fair and wine and beer tasting.   Additional information on this event can be found at http://business.mchenrychamber.com/events/details/country-meadows-6081.  Come out and enjoy a day of community interaction!  Community events contribute to quality of life, attract people from out-of-town to our City and provide an opportunity to socialize and show-off McHenry’s premier downtown public gathering place:  Veterans Memorial Park.  Hope to see you there!!!

Economic development encompasses numerous things including:  community service, events, tourism, history and other factors which people and businesses consider when deciding where to locate, reside or visit.  Public safety, infrastructure, schools, libraries, parks, open space, hospitals and other institutions play a pivotal role in an holistic approach to economic development and are extremely integral to a community’s vitality.  The City of McHenry is proud to have a community which includes all of these and a place people are proud to live, visit and do business.  Please help us accomplish this goal to the greatest extent practical for businesses, residents, visitors and the City!
The City Council is continually evaluating ways to assist in promoting business, tourism, community events and service!  Economic development is an ongoing effort the City is committed to and is a community-wide effort.  At the end of the day the entire community and everyone who is a part of it benefits!

TEXT AMENDMENTS APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL TO ASSIST WITH BUSINESS ATTRACTION, EXPANSION AND RETENTION
On August 17 the City Council approved text amendments to the City’s zoning ordinance to further promote and support business growth and development.  The amendments include: a streamlined procedure to allow outdoor seating in conjunction with a restaurant, permitting restaurants to have indoor entertainment without obtaining a conditional use permit; restaurants are now also permitted uses in the O-2 Office Park, I-1 Industrial and BP Business Park zoning districts.

If you are interested in learning more about these amendments or pursue obtaining permits for outdoor seating please contact me.  Additionally, if there are things you believe the City should consider to do more to promote business please contact me and I would be more than happy to have a discussion with you.
The City of McHenry wants to be “business friendly” and not just state we are “business friendly.”  Please help us accomplish this goal to the greatest extent practical for businesses, residents, visitors and the City!

The City of McHenry welcomes and appreciates companies investing in our City.  The City Council is continually evaluating ways to assist in promoting business attraction, retention and growth, one example included in this post describes the recent amendments the City Council approved.

Economic development is an ongoing effort the City is committed to and it is also a community-wide effort.  At the end of the day the entire community and everyone who is a part of it benefits...Thank you for the feedback and suggestions you’ve provided on what categories of businesses should be added and what businesses in the City should be recognized in response to my question in the last post following the Northwest Herald's publication of its Readers' Choice Awards.
